Camp Rookie/First Class - March Outing
I have been meaning to send this email for awhile. But I have beenenjoying Spring Break way too much to send emails.
Camp Rookie/First class went great! The Bobcats, Black Dragons and Flaming Hawks did a great job teaching the other patrols. We had 12 put of 14 of our New Scouts there and they all earned the Firem'n Chit and Totin' Chip as well as learned a lot about knots, first aid and orienteering. Now they just have to keep pressing on toward Tenderfoot.
The No Names and Sharks have several boys that are very close to First Class now.
I think it was just as good for the scouts that were teaching too. They were able to refresh themselves on the different skills they may have forgotten over the years and get acquainted with the New Scouts.
The New Scouts did well with their camping and cooking also thanks to their Troop Guides; thanks guys! They all seemed to have a good time.
The Orienteering Course got mixed reviews. Most of the boys enjoyed it, a few struggled with it and a few hated it thanks to faulty compasses. That's the story I heard and I am sure they are sticking with it. Actually, the cheap Wal-Mart compass (that I suggested) ended up being a problem. The boys all need a good orienteering style compass.
We had a great campfire thanks for Brantley and Norris, no Keenan, no Norris, I think.
Thanks to all the last minute drivers we had, you saved my life. I have promised to never plan another outing as long as I am Scoutmaster.
Thanks to all the Adult Leaders that went especially the New Parents. You did great helping sign-off books and helping teach. Ed is now the Backpacking Cook Master. I have never seen Eggs, and Ham done so well backcountry style (if you don't mind carrying a griddle).
The Senior Boys, formerly the Older Boys (that title now belongs to the Bobcats, Black Dragons and Flaming Hawks) camped in the wilderness with minimal supplies, used one match, boiled their water and other cool stuff. They will tell us all about it on Monday. I hope they have pictures.
Finally, Shelby and Chris did a great job at SPL and ASPL having to deal with a stressed out Scoutmaster and a bunch of new scouts. Kudos!
Yours in Scouting,
Bobby Thornton
